What's a Geocache?

Geocaching is a outdoor "sport" for GPS users, which increasingly means just about everybody (they're standard in a lot of cars and even cellphones now). You can use the GPS system in your car to find caches, or you can use handheld GPS receivers (well under $100) to play. There are a couple of websites, primary among which seems to be Geocaching.Com that list the coordinates of caches. Basically, you plug your zipcode in, and the site returns the location of geocaches that are near you and their GPS coordinates, which you can then track down. For more game information, check the site.

What's in the cache?

At minimum, a logbook and writing instrument, so you can record the date you found the cache as well as any comments you may have for the maintainer of the cache. It is customary to place small items in the cache for visitors to take away, and it is customary for visitors to leave small items as well.

Who plays, and why should SPSU care?

SPSU should care because the folks who are playing are in our demographic. They are either gadget enthusiasts, mapping enthusiasts, or some other technological subset who are potential students. In particular, the Scouts are heavily into Geocaching. At minimum, it gets people onto our campus which is a good visibility opportunity. It costs almost nothing to maintain a geocache once it's set up, but it gets SPSU in front of a big group of eyeballs that might not otherwise be reached.

How can I be involved?

If your department has small items you'd like to include, send them via campus mail to Jeff Carter, G-149. SPARC has received a donation of a small waterproof metal box, and that is going to serve as the container. What is needed now, of course, is content.
