Mathematics Learning Support Courses
From SPSU Wiki
FOR ANYONE INVOLVED IN REGISTRATION, ESPECIALLY ADVISORS:
We have a new and important option for helping students whose mathematical background is weak.
Georgia Highlands College (formerly Floyd) now has a branch on our campus. They offer Learning Support mathematics courses (Math 0097 and Math 0099). These are pre-College Algebra courses that SPSU does not have. Instead of starting in Math 1111 here at SPSU, a student may choose to take a Georgia Highlands learning support course first as a transient (and never have to leave campus for it). Here is the process to follow if you have a student that you think would benefit from Math 0097 or Math 0099. Note that this applies only to taking Math 0097 and 0099 (not Math 1111 or 1113, etc) at Georgia Highlands.

Identification
Students cannot be forced into taking Math 0097 or 0099. As accepted SPSU students, they always have the option of starting with a Southern Polytechnic mathematics course if they wish. Many, however, would benefit from the preparation the courses offer, and have a much easier time in their SPSU mathematics courses later. You should council students in the following categories to at least consider Math 0097 and/or 0099 before taking an SPSU mathematics course: Students who have not taken mathematics in many years. Students who have a score 13 or less on the sum of the first two parts of the MAT. Students who express concern over their mathematical background or preparation. Students that you think, for any reason, could be helped by the courses.
Referral
I will be glad to talk with any student about their mathematics, SPSU's mathematics sequence, and Georgia Highland's Learning Support courses. You may refer them to me if they (or you) have any questions or want to discuss their situation: Joel Fowler, x7235, jfowler@spsu.edu . If the student is already sure that the Georgia Highlands learning support mathematics is what they want, they don't have to talk to me. They can go immediately to step 3.
Transient Request from SPSU
The student should contact Bennie Houck in the Registrar's Office, x7264, bhouck@spsu.edu, to obtain transient permission. There is short form to fill out. She will process the form and create a transient authorization letter. We have taken steps to streamline the transient approval process for students seeking Math 0097 or 0099 from Georgia Highlands. There should be little delay
Transient Permission from Georgia Highlands
The student should take the transient authorization letter to the Georgia Highlands office in building D to finish the process.
One last note
Georgia Highlands begins their term on Monday, just like us. Students interested in doing this should act quickly.
